Dennis Jay Cagan

Dennis Cagan is an entrepreneur and high-technology industry veteran, having founded or co-founded over a dozen different companies. His is widely regarded as an expert on high technology entrepreneurship and corporate governance. Dennis advises private company owners and CEOs on forming and scaling their companies and boards of directors, and augments management teams in his trademarked Shadow CEO®role. These activities are pursued through Caganco Incorporated (est. 1984). Mr. Cagan currently sits on several private company boards of directors, coast-to-coast.

Mr. Cagan co-founded his first software company and formed his first company board in 1968. In 1976 he founded his fifth company and took it public on NASDAQ in 1981. In 1982 the company was ranked #32 on the initial publication of the Inc. Magazine ‘Inc. 100’. Mr. Cagan has served on 71 company fiduciary boards, both public (10) and private, predominantly in early and mid-stage technology companies. Mr. Cagan is a seasoned CEO/Chairman and has been a CEO of both public and private companies (including one public Unicorn), a venture capitalist, private investor, consultant, professional board member, university business school instructor, and expert witness.

Mr. Cagan has spoken about technology and governance throughout the USA and Internationally, and authored dozens of articles. In 1979 he was the Keynote Speaker at the first annual COMDEX Show in Las Vegas (he spoke every year through 1985). In 2011 he was inducted into the IT Hall of Fame (CompTIA). In 2013 NACD and the Dallas Business Journal selected him in the inaugural annual group of 12 North Texas Outstanding Directors. In 2013 he was the Keynote Speaker at the first annual Private Company Governance Summit in Washington, D.C. (he spoke at four more annual summits in 2014, 2015, 2016, and keynoting again in 2019). In 2017 Mr. Cagan published his book, The Board of Directors of a Private Enterprise.
